Surgical Scar

Each year in the developed world it is estimated that around 100 million patients acquire scars as a result of surgery or injuries. These are acquired from around 55 million elective surgical operations, and 25 million operations after trauma, it is estimated that 11 million of these are keloid, or ‘raised’ scars and 4 million burn scars.

Scarring occurs when the deeper layers of your skin are damaged by trauma or surgery. During the wound-healing process, your body will rapidly try to repair and heal the wound, producing lower quality collagen fibres than are found in healthy skin. This means that the quality and structure of the new skin is different, leaving you with a scar once your body has finished healing.

There are 3 main types of scars:

Hypertrophic Scars: Excessive collagen deposits appear raised, but not to the degree observed with keloids.

Hypertrophic Scars

Keloid Scars: Can appear as a firm, rubbery lesion or shiny, fibrous nodules.

Keloid

Contracture Scars: Are characterised by extremely tight skin that can restrict your ability to move.

Contracture Scars

People often find that scarring as a result of surgery or injury can make them feel self-conscious about their appearance, negatively impacting confidence and self-esteem.

Treatment options: SkinPen micro needling

Skinpen is an FDA approved microneedling treatment which is proven to reduce the appearance of surgical scars, injury scars and acne scars.

How can SkinPen microneedling help improve surgical scars?

SkinPen Precision (Microneedling) creates controlled micro injuries that stimulate the body’s natural wound healing response which initiates the release of natural growth factors to improve collagen formation and cellular tissue. SkinPen Precision can effectively remodel scar tissue whilst maintaining the overall structure of the skin. SkinPen can be used effectively on all areas of the face and body.

  • SkinPen mechanically breaks down scar tissue.
  • Activates cellular enzymes known as matrix metalloproteinases, or MMPs.
  • Remodels scar tissue through the proper deposition of collagen and elastin.
