Areola Restoration – What is it and how can I get it done?

What is areola restoration?

Areola restoration can be required following any form of breast surgery, but primarily following a reconstruction after having a mastectomy due to breast cancer. The areola (the circle around the nipple) is tattooed on to the newly made breast, to create the illusion of a real areola. This procedure can also be used to create a 3D nipple, if one was not made within the reconstruction.

What would I have to do as a model?

Come and get a free new areola and nipple (if required)! We are in need of a demonstration model who has not had this procedure before. The model will be the demonstration model, which means Caron will herself be carrying out the treatment in front of the 2 students. When you arrive at the clinic, you will be greeted at reception before Caron will come and retrieve you and take you into the training room. You will meet the students before laying on the treatment couch for the treatment. There is no charge for any models, as a thank you for supporting our training days and enabling this treatment to become more widely available throughout the UK.

Interested?

If you are interested please call us on 01296 614441, or if know someone who may be, please share this post. The model required on this occasion is for: Thursday 25th August at 1pm.

We run a handful of training days so if you can’t make this date please still get in touch and you can be added to the model mailing list. Caron does also provide this treatment privately within her clinic, so if being a model isn’t for you, you can book in to see Caron within her own clinic list.

Why is winter the ideal time for IPL hair removal treatment?

Why is winter the ideal time for IPL hair removal treatment?

IPL (intense pulsed light) is a treatment used for the long-term (permanent) removal of external body hair.

This treatment is always best carried out during winter. This is because, your skin must not have an active tan whilst under-going any IPL treatments. By an active tan, we mean pigment in the skin, so that nice shade of brown (or red!) that you go during the summer months.

This doesn’t mean you can’t have IPL during the summer months, but you must be extremely careful with your sun exposure. It is therefore clear to see why IPL is the perfect treatment to take during winter! You can complete a course of hair removal without having to worry about sun exposure, and be hair free in time for next summer.

How does IPL hair removal work?

IPL hair removal uses intense pulsed light to target each individual hair follicle right from the base, stopping the hair from re-growing. After a cycle of treatments taken at specific durations, the IPL will have targeted the hair follicle at each of it’s life cycles, which results in the end of that hair follicles growth. Put simply, your hair will stop growing (hurrah!).

Things you should think about before having IPL hair removal:

  • You cannot have any natural or fake tan on your skin during your course of treatments.
  • You must not have any perfumes, oils or creams on your skin on the day of treatment.
  • There are certain medications that will contraindicate this treatment, you will need to make your practitioner aware of your medical history during your consultation.

How to start the process

To get started with your IPL hair removal treatment you first need a Free Consultation and Patch Test. At this consultation, your practitioner will go through with you in detail how the treatment works, and will make sure you are suitable for treatment. Following this, a small patch test will be carried out to the treatment area. For this to take place, there will need to be a little hair growth showing through the skin in the treatment area.

Following your consultation, once seven days have passed, you can book in for your first treatment. The length of your treatment will be determined by the treatment area being treatment, but can be anything between 15 minutes to 1.5 hours.

Your course of treatments will be taken every four to six weeks, and a minimum of five treatments will be needed. Your practitioner will explain all of this to you during your consultation.

Following the successful completion of your IPL hair removal course (also known as laser hair removal) your treatment area will no longer grow hair, and you won’t need to shave or wax the area anymore. We do recommend one singular treatment annually, to keep the hair follicle dormant and stopping the hair from re-growing.

How to book

To book your Free Consultation and Patch Test you can:

5 Things To Know About Dermal Fillers

5 Things To Know About Dermal Fillers

1. Most soft tissue Fillers are natural.

Naturally derived dermal fillers are made up of collagen and hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is produced naturally by the body, with collagen bring either bovine or human-derived.

2. Fillers are not just used for facial anti-ageing.

Primarily, dermal fillers are used and marketed for facial aesthetics, to fill and restore deep wrinkles, such as the nasolabial folds. However, they can also be used, with tremendous results, to fill and rejuvenate other areas of the body, such as the back of the hands.

3. They stimulate your OWN collagen growth.

Whilst Mother-Nature will always reign supreme, depleting the body’s own natural collagen as we age, dermal fillers will stimulate and encourage growth of NEW collagen, to replace and further support the facial structure.

4. Dermal Fillers are not just for women!

The uptake of men having dermal filler treatment is growing year upon year. It works exactly the same and can help to define jawlines and give the ‘chiseled’ look that is on-trend at the moment.

5. The effects of Dermal Fillers are temporary.

Unless specifically using a semi-permanent filler, HA fillers commonly used will see the effects wear off after about 3 months. It does depend on the type of filler used, but results won’t be permanent as your body starts to naturally reabsorb the product.

Dermaplaning – What is it?

Dermaplaning; what is it?

You may have heard about this on-trend facial but are you unclear on what it actually is? If so, let us help you.

The Process

Dermaplaning is a non-invasive short treatment, used to slough off all the debris sitting on the very top layer of the skin (the epidermis). By using a hand held scalpel, your highly experienced Practitioner will gently scrape away any congestion and impurities sitting on your skins surface. This action exfoliates the skin at the same time as removing the superficial layer of ‘peach fuzz’.

The Skincare

As well as this, you will receive tailored skincare within the facial from the medical grade skincare, AlumierMD. Adapting the products used to suit your individual skincare needs, you can sit back and relax whilst you are deep cleansed, exfoliated, and treated with targeted serums.
This simple treatment is one of the most effective out there, offering instant results with visibly clearer skin and an unparalleled soft-to-touch finish.

The lens that see’s it all

We are living in an age when Zoom meetings and Team calls are becoming apart of our everyday lives. Face-to-face has a whole new meaning when it is camera-to-camera, it sees everything!

After trying to find a position that showcases your best background, the angles, shadows and lighting never seem to help us look our best, and after all, we always aim to impress our fellow colleagues.

The past 8 months have taken it’s toll on all of us in one way or another and for many it has been aesthetically. Stress and anxiety cause physical reactions in the body, and in turn our appearance. The last thing any of us need right now is to start feeling down about ourselves or conscious of being on camera. We want confidence and positivity! There may be things you have noticed that you want help or advise on. So how can Karma House help?

Frown Lines

Location: Frown lines and wrinkles can be found on the forehead, in-between and around the sides of the eyes (known as crows feet).
Treatment: The most effective treatment for unwanted lines and wrinkles is muscle relaxing injections. Performed by a nurse, small doses of botulinum toxin are administered to the face to halt the movement of certain facial muscles that are causing the lines and wrinkles.
Longevity: To maintain your results this treatment needs to be repeated every 12 weeks. Should you choose not to repeat treatment, the botulinum toxin will naturally break down and your muscle movement will return to normal, along with the appearance of the fine lines and wrinkles.
Treatment Time: 30-45 minutes.
Cost: This treatment is cost per area; 1 area is ยฃ200, 2 area is ยฃ280 and 3 area is ยฃ320.

Poor Skin Complexion

Location: Face. Poor skin complexion can affect the entire face or only parts of the face. This could include spots, blocked pores and dry or oily skin.
Treatment: Various options are available for poor skin complexion. From advanced skin peels to IPL skin rejuvenation, we can target the problem with precision and science to help restore your skins healthy glow.
Longevity: Depending on the treatment you will likely need to come into clinic once per month/once every 4-6 weeks to keep on top of your skin health and treatment results. Once an initial treatment plan has taken place to restore your skins complexion, you may be signed off with an at-home skincare routine to maintain your skins health.
Treatment Time: 30-60 minutes.
Cost: Varying depending on your treatment plan, we have facial treatments from ยฃ65-ยฃ350.

Hooded Eyelids

Location: Top and/or bottom eyelids where the skin has become loose and sags.
Treatment: Plasma Lifting is a non-surgical alternative to blepharoplasty (excessive eyelid surgical removal). Plasmalift therapy uses a device fitted with a microscopic needle to create minute, laser-made incisions into skin that is starting to sag or lose volume. This process heats up tiny columns of the skin, causing the skin fibers to contract and shorten through controlled skin damage. This, in turn, kick starts the bodyโ€™s natural healing process, boosting collagen production, and leading to the tightening and removal of excess skin. It is minimally invasive, quick, and so effective that the results can only be compared to plastic surgery.
Longevity: Once results are achieved you will not need any further immediate treatment. As you continue to age over the years your eyes may start to show signs of further ageing and sagging and at this point you may want to consider another treatment, however this would be years after your first treatment.
Treatment Time: 60-90 minutes.
Cost: ยฃ350-ยฃ600.

Missing Eyebrows

Location: Eyebrows.
Treatment: Cosmetic Tattooing is used to naturally rebuild sparse or missing eyebrows. Using natural pigments to create shape and definition, a microscopic needle implants the pigment into the surface layer of the skin. This is what makes it different to a traditional permanent tattoo, that goes much deeper into the dermal layer of the skin. You can choose your style of eyebrow with digital microblading, powder brows or block brows, depending on the look you are looking to achieve.
Longevity: Once your Cosmetic Tattooing has been completed it will last between 12-18 months before beginning to gradually fade. If you want to maintain your tattooed brows, a colour-boost will be required every 12-18 months which will keep them new and vibrant for another 12-18 months and so on.
Treatment Time: 60-90 minutes.
Cost: New Set ยฃ350ย  Colour-Boost ยฃ175

Skin Tags

Location: Anywhere on the body, common in areas of friction such as the neck and armpits.
Treatment: Skin Tag removal using thermocoagulation. A very fine heated needle is used to slice through the base of the tag, cauterizing as is does. This will clot the wound to prevent bleeding. Depending on the size of the tag depends on the complexity of the treatment; some smaller tags are removed in seconds with little-no pressure felt, where as some bigger tags may take a few passes to complete the cut off.
Longevity: Lifelong. Once the tags are removed they are gone forever! However, this doesn’t stop new tags from forming just like the removed tags did.
Treatment Time: 15-30 minutes.
Cost: ยฃ40-ยฃ95 depending on size and complexity of tags.

Pigmentation

Location: Anywhere on the body, common in areas of sun exposure such as the face, hands and chest.
Treatment: IPL or Cryotherapy can be used to treat pigmentation, depending on the depth and strength of the pigmentation. Cryotherapy is used on superficial pigmentation that sits in the surface layer of the skin and uses liquid nitrogen to blast the pigmentation patches. IPL stands for intense pulsed light and is used on deeper more established areas of pigmentation and draws on advanced technology and clinically-proven techniques to stimulate new skin growth and reduce redness. The wavelengths from the light cause pigmented areas in the skin to break down into smaller particles, triggering the bodyโ€™s natural healing process and forming new cells. Your skin will become clearer, brighter and smoother from the very first session.
Longevity: Cryotherapy requires 1-2 sessions, it can be more depending on the individuals pigmentation. For IPL a course of treatment will be needed, on average between 4-8 sessions.
Treatment Time: 15-30 minutes.
Cost: Cryotherapy Initial Treatment ยฃ65 Cryotherapy Follow-up ยฃ32.50ย  ย IPL from ยฃ65

Microblading v Cosmetic Tattooing

Microblading v Cosmetic Tattooing

The last five years have seen a rise in microblading demand across the globe. It was all the rage when it dropped on the scene and it has since stuck around, but at what cost?

As a Cosmetic Tattooist of 32 years I have seen many crazes come and go; different styles of eyebrows, even different colors! But nothing has stuck around like microblading has. Clients call requesting to book in for microblading with little or even no knowledge about what microblading actually is, and how it is different to cosmetic tattooing.

Here I am going to breakdown the world of Semi Permanent Makeup and with it the misconception of microblading v cosmetic tattooing. I will look at the different methods used, trends on offer and a summary between these treatments, because what has become an apparent ‘mind field’ of semi permanent make-up needn’t be at all!

Methods

Cosmetic Tattooing

Cosmetic Tattooing uses a digital machine, with a handpiece that holds the disposable needle. The low frequency of the machine results in the pigment being planted into the skin at a much more superficial level to that of traditional permanent tattoos, resulting in the less permanent result. These digital machines place pigment into the skin using a very fine needle that penetrates the skin in a repeated up and down motion. This method of tattooing is used for all types of semi permanent makeup including eyebrows, eyeliner and lip colours.

Treatment Time: 60-75 minutes
Heal Time: 5-14 days
Longevity: 12-18 months. An annual colour-boost (top-up) is recommended to keep the pigment vivid and fresh.
Comfort: Some mild discomfort may be felt during the procedure with the vibration of the handpiece being felt as it works over the area. This method is non-invasive and therefore is often described as pain-free.

Microblading

Microblading is used with a very simple disposable handheld tool that holds the needle at the bottom, resembling that of a Stanley knife. The tool is used to slice the skin, creating very fine incisions. The depth and penetration is totally dependent on the treating practitioners pressure, with the pigment sinking into the skin as the incision is made. This method of tattooing is used for eyebrows.

Treatment Time: 60 minutes
Heal Time: 5-10 days
Longevity: 6-12 months. Due to the scar tissue that forms following this treatment, a maximum of 4 treatments should ever be carried out in one lifetime on one individual.
Comfort: Microblading is an invasive procedure as it creates fine incisions into the skin with the blade. These cuts can be felt during treatment as a drag or pull on the skin, often described as a deep scratching.

Trends

Individual Hair Strokes

Individual hair strokes are used to build up shape and create natural looking brows. This style is ideal for those with some natural hair and shape in place that can be built on to form the perfect looking brows. It can also be used on those with little – no natural hair left to create an extremely soft and natural brow line. Both cosmetic tattooing and microblading can create very fine individual hair strokes. When the method of cosmetic tattooing is used to create individual hair strokes, it is called ‘Digital Microblading‘.

Ombre Brows

Ombre brows use a blend of block/powder brows with individual hair strokes to create a full yet soft brow look. Starting off soft and often with hair strokes at the front, they blend out into a more pronounced brow finish. Ombre brows are suited to people who have little – no natural hair or shape left.

Block Brows

Block brows are dark and bold with lots of definition and shape. They are suited for those who have little – no natural hair left, or for those who seek a bold brow. Cosmetic tattooing is used to pack in the pigment and form a solid brow line.

Individual Hair Strokes

Ombre

Summary

Both Cosmetic Tattooing and Microblading can create soft, natural individual hair strokes wanted by so many.

As explained above, Microblading can not be deemed as an on-going treatment for the use of semi permanent makeup. After repetitive microblading treatments scar tissue begins to form as a result of the incisions being made into the skin. This is not an outcome that anybody wants and so microblading should be viewed as a one-off treatment, or for someone who knows they do not want to maintain their semi permanent makeup forever. Perhaps they are looking for microblading in the lead up to a special event or occasion.

Cosmetic Tattooing can offer the entire range of styles and trends, including microblading in the form of digital microblading. The results are more stable and permanent and can be repeated for life long semi permanent makeup users.

With a little education and knowledge into the world of semi permanent makeup you can evaluate what you think is right for you before going to see your chosen practitioner. Too often requests for microblading are carried out by inadequately trained practitioners without the clients full understanding of the treatment or the on-going maintenance or affect on the skin.

Time to Peel

Time to peel!

As we etch our way closer to the beginning of Autumn and further away from the beginning of summer, signs are already starting to show left behind by the lock-down heat wave! The timing was perfect and we were all treated to a gloriously hot premature summer, basking in the garden as lock-down hit and we were stuck at home. But did we all have our skin health at the forefront of our minds? Did we all religiously apply SPF daily to protect our fragile skin? We are going to go with no… after all, we were in the middle of a world wide pandemic and serious crisis!

Although perfectly understandable how some skincare routines and sun protection application may have lapsed during lock-down, we now want to deal with the effects this has had on your skin and help you get back to a happy and healthy complexion.

What damage has been done over the summer lock-down?

  1. Pigmentation: the extreme temperature highs and the time that was suddenly available to spend outside, will have dramatically increased your risk of pigmentation. Pigmentation is visible in the skin in the form of dark brown patches or spots.
  2. Broken Veins: you may have noticed thread veins appear in your cheeks or over your nose? the extreme temperatures, and possibly the increased in-take of alcohol, will cause thread veins to become broken as they make themselves visible at the surface of your skin.

What can we do to treat and get our skin back to it’s healthy state?

As we all slowly get back to some welcomed routine and what we are learning to be our ‘new normal’, now is the best time to get back on top of your skincare and your skin health. In-clinic treatments will help you to fast-track your skin back to health as well as at home products to continue to maintain its healthy and glowing appearance.

  1. Skin Peels: There are various options of skin peels available in-clinic, from gentle to the deep penetrating peels. Depending on what your skin is in need of and how we choose to deliver it will depend on the type of peel you have. This can be discussed with your practitioner to ensure you are opting for the right treatment prior to going ahead. Our AlumierMD Peels have no down-time and deliver instant results. To treat deeper rooted and more challenging skin health problems, you can see our Registered Aesthetic Nurse who can offer the Perfect Peelโ„ข. This peel delivers high medical-grade ingredients deep into the skin. For this reason you will experience down-time with the Perfect Peelโ„ข, as you physically see your unhealthy skin and all it’s pigmentation peel away over the next coming days following the peel!
  2. Veinwave: Veinwave is a treatment that uses thermocoagulation to heat and destroy broken veins visible in the skin. A very fine heated needle penetrates the vein, causing it to breakdown and dry up, naturally disappearing back into the body.

How can I book!

If you feel your skin needs and deserves some TLC, book in for treatment or a Free Consultation today. As well as pigmentation and thread veins, we have a wide variety of in-clinic treatments for all skin health complaints including;

  • wrinkles
  • open pores
  • dryness
  • oily skin
  • blackheads
  • fine lines
  • sagging skin
  • acne

Maskne Skincare; helping you treat face mask acne

Maskne Skincare; helping you treat face mask acne

The ‘new normal’ is what we hear so often at the moment; having to queue outside shops, no hugging friends or family, and the use of face masks. We can all adjust and understand why these measures are in place, but some of them have some unwelcome side effects! Introducing to you; maskne. You may have heard of this new skin complaint by now, facial acne brought on by the use of face masks. So, what can we do about it? We all know face masks won’t be going away any time soon, so let’s learn a little more about what is going on underneath them now, to help prevent unwanted maskne.

Why am I getting acne from wearing a face mask?
When wearing face masks your skin is being covered up with no exposure to fresh air. Material is touching the skin and it can get hot under there, creating the ideal environment for bacteria to form. This environment will also block the oil glands and hair follicles, another prime location for dirt and bacteria to get trapped. All of this, is a breeding ground for spots to breakout, blackheads to appear and acne to develop.

What can I do to prevent it?
There are some things you can do to help look after your skin while using face masks, to prevent breakouts and maintain healthy skin.

1) Keep your face mask clean; make sure you have more than two face masks so that you can wash them regularly. They will be picking up dirt, both visible and invisible every day. This is then being placed directly onto your skin. A clean face mask is the number one priority when dealing with maskne.

2) Regular skincare routine; keep to a regular skincare routine every am and pm. This should include a cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise, with additional serums and masks being used if possible. We need to keep the skin clean and remove any trapped oil, sebum secretions and dirt collected and distributed from your face mask.

3) Remove all makeup; it is important to remove all makeup at the end of the day, with a cleanser and not a baby wipe. As above, make sure the skin is being cleaned properly each day, not left for further bacteria to grow. We always advise the use of mineral makeup to promote good skin health.

4) No heavy duty; your usual moisturiser may be heavy and rich to suit your skin type. Consider changing this when using a face mask. The extra heat and moist condition the face mask creates will promote excessive perspiration which will aid the blocking of oil glands and the creation of dirt.

5) Retinol regularity; review the frequency you are using any retinol products. As we know, retinols can often irritate the skin so wearing a face mask over this sensitive skin will only irritate it further. Consider using any retinol products less frequently when wearing your face mask.

6) SPF protection; you should still be applying your daily SPF to the face, including the lower part of your face that is at times covered by your face mask. Look at your SPF and your moisturiser, do you need both? Most clinical SPF’s act as a moisturiser as well and can remove the need for a moisturiser during the day. As we mentioned in point 4, we don’t want heavy duty, so cutting down on the number of products used in the morning could be very beneficial to promote a light-weight and breathable environment.

7) Time to sink in; always allow 30 minutes before putting your face mask on after applying any facial serums, moisturisers or SPF’s. This will allow everything to sink down into the skin where it needs to be, instead of being tampered with by your face mask.

8) Limit your face mask time; wherever possible while adhering to all social distancing and face mask measures, remove your mask at intervals throughout the day and give it some breathing space. If you can, within a lunch break or tea break, go outside, remove your mask and let your skin dry out and breath. If you are in an environment where your face mask must be on for the majority of the day, consider swapping your face mask at lunch time, using two per day to give your skin health the best chance.
